Und noch eine kleine Anekdote am Rande: Laut der Zeitung "South Africa's Star" wurde Metallicas Auftritt in Kapstadt am
25.März 2006 nach 10 Minuten von einem Stromausfall unterbrochen.
James Hetfield witzelte auf der Bühne dazu: "Wer hat vergessen, die Stromrechnung zu bezahlen?" und fügte hinzu, dass
der peinliche Vorfall im Backstagebereich damit entschuldigt würde, dass das Equipment zu schwach für Heavy Metal
wäre.
Stromausfälle sind in dieser Gegend Südafrikas jedoch nichts seltenes. Das westliche Kap wird schon seit Monaten
von Ausfällen der Stromversorgung geplagt. Der Stromausfall war aber auch nicht das einzige Problem, das die Musikfans
beim "Coca Colab Massive Mix Concert" im Kapstadt erleben mussten. Wer sich an den Ständen Essen oder Getränke kaufen
wollte, musste sich stundenlang anstellen. Dabei gab es die Regel, dass man nur zwei Bier auf einmal bestellen
durfte, während die Stände der Imbißbuden-Kette "Nando's" schon um 18 Uhr ausverkauft waren.

Therese Owen (Geschlecht unbekannt ) vom afrikanischen "tonight"-Magazin/Fernsehsender interviewte dieser Tage den lieben
Kirk zwischen den Südafrika-gigs. Ein paar Auszüge aus diesem 0815-interview...:
Wie bewahrt sich die Band ihre Energie und Dynamik untereinander?
"wir haben defintiv ein Ritual. vor nem Gig finden wir uns alle in nem Raum zusammen und spielen einfach Riffs- unsere
eigenen, und auch die von anderen. wir jammen einfach so für 20 Minütchen, weisst du. Dann gehen wir unser Aufwärmprogramm
durch, n paar Lockerungsübungen, dieser Kram halt. Ich mache Yoga."
Warum haben sich Metallica entschieden ein paar Gigs in Südafrika einzulegen?
"wir wollten immer schon hierher, aber das Zeitmanagement hat nie so wirklich gepasst. Im moment sind wir ja viel mit
Songs schreiben beschäftigt, also hatten wir endlich mal Zeit hier vorbeizuschaun. ausserdem werden wir auf Safari gehn,
zwischen den Gigs...*freu* "
Hättest du dir je träumen lassen nach 25 Jahren noch vor ausverkauften haus zu spielen?
"Ich hab heut zu James gesagt, dass wir wohl noch einiges vor uns haben. Ich glaube so schnell werden wir keine längeren
Pausen mehr einlegen. als ich anfing Gitarre zu spielen wollte ich einfach nur gut spielen. Als ich aufwuchs liebte ich
Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Kiss. ich wollte einfach nur ein guter Gitarrist sein. Als das mit Metallica
anfing waren wir die Gesetzlosen, die Rebellen. Keiner wollte was mit uns zu tun haben. Wir waren wüst und ungestüm. All
diese Jahre dachten wir, dass uns das ganze zu absolut nichts führen wird und eines tages wachten wir auf und es war wie
"du meine güte, wir sind berühmt, jeder kennt uns, ach du sch..."
Was haltet ihr davon von so vielen aktuellen Bands als grosse inspiration gesehen zu werden?
"Es zeigt uns, dass wir das richtige getan haben. aber ich kenne die Kraft die aus der Inspiration erwächst. Es ist eine
Ehre und ein tolles Gefühl, dass wir so viele Menschen inspiriert haben. Ich wurde von Black sabbath stark geprägt und
letztens erst spielten wir ein Tribut für Sabbath und die ganze Band sah uns dabei zu. Ich hab mich ziemlich komisch
gefühlt...die Jungs waren offensichtlich sehr amüsiert von der Idee, dass wir ihre Songs für sie spielen würden... "

METALLICA ERWEISEN BLACK SABBATH DIE EHRE *UPDATE* | 15.03.06
Kurz vor ihrer Südafrika Safari haben Metallica noch einen kleinen Abstecher nach New York gemacht um den Jungs von
Black Sabbath ihre Ehre zu erweisen. Diese wurden nämlich letzten Montag letztendlich in die Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame aufgenommen.
Metallica wurden gebeten ein paar Klassiker live zu performen, was sich die Jungs natürlich nicht nehmen lassen
haben. Hetfield (in höchster Stimmlage) und seine Mitstreiter haben Hole in the sky und Iron Man unter großer Begeisterung
des Publikums zum besten gegeben. Vorher haben James und Lars allerdings noch eine Laudatio auf Black Sabbath gehalten,
welche ihr hier im wortlaut nachlesen könnt:
Lars Ulrich:
"Let me start off by saying that, if I'm doing my math right, we are gonna celebrate BLACK SABBATH tonight a decade or so
late, but that's another conversation and another argument.
Oh, by the way, Sharon, if I fuck this up in any way, please no eggs. This is my finest leather, this is my finest
leather.
Anyway, I wonder how many times on this very night in the last 20 years that the words 'If it weren't for you, we wouldn't
be here' have been uttered. Well, here we go once more. Bill, Geezer, Ozzy and Tony, if it weren't for you, we wouldn't be
here. Obviously if there was no BLACK SABBATH, there would be no METALLICA. If there was no BLACK SABBATH, hard rock
and heavy metal as we know it today would look, sound and be shaped very, very differently. So if there was no BLACK
SABBATH, I could possibly still be a morning newspaper delivery boy — no fun, no fun. So thank you for meeting, thank
you for knowing each other, and thank you for forming a band so I would have something relevant and important to do on
this Monday night in 2006.
Over the past 20 years, remarkable talent has been hailed on this special night — talent whose names have been and
will forever define the broader term 'rock and roll.' So it's really interesting to me how few of these names are
synonymous with a single particular subgenre of music. And as one who has fought labeling at any opportunity given,
I hereby not only acknowledge but scream from every fucking rooftop that BLACK SABBATH is and always will be synonymous
with the term 'heavy metal.'
SABBATH join what I consider a very short list of artists who can claim to be symonymous with their specific genre
of music — one being BOB MARLEY with reggae, BOB DYLAN with folk, JOHNNY CASH with country, perhaps BILL HALEY with
rockabilly, but no matter how you fucking slice and dice it, when you say 'heavy metal,' the words BLACK SABBATH hover
in the shadows fighting for pole position. On any given day, the heavy metal genre might as well be subtitled 'music
derivative of BLACK SABBATH.' Sure, we're all respectful to BLUE CHEER, we're enamored with LED ZEPPELIN, we're in awe
of DEEP PURPLE and of course admiring of STEPPENWOLF and John Kay's first uttering of the words 'heavy metal,' but when
it comes to defining a genre within the world of heavy music, SABBATH stand alone. They took pre-existing elements of
blues, rock and soul, threw in the right amount of darkness and street cred, and fused those elements with a previously
undiscovered 'X' factor — whatever the fuck that was — creating something unheard, unexperienced, unique and utterly
groundbreaking with their huge hymns of doom. BLACK SABBATH are an entity of their own — in my mind, the only word that
fits is the word 'pioneer.' They were, and much more importantly, still are considered pioneers of all things heavy.
All the metal bands and all the so-called subgenres of metal still trace their lineage to one place: four kids in their
late teens from the black country of Birmingham who named their band after a 1963 Italian horror movie starring Boris
Karloff. Subsequently they changed hard rock and by doing so the entire family tree of metal and everything that metal,
for better or worse, stands for, was and will be forever both invigorated and elevated.
"Are they taking the piss? The question 'Are they taking the piss?' still rumbles in my mind. It's 1986 and we're
fortunate enough to land the much-coveted support slot on Ozzy's 'Ultimate Sin' tour. We would, when given the
chance to soundcheck, often start jamming on any number of SABBATH songs — be it 'Symptom of the Universe', 'Fairies
Wear Boots', 'Sweet Leaf', or what have you. Apparently, as the hallowed sounds of our meek attempt at SABBATH music
reached into Ozzy's dressing room, his first reaction — so I was told — was, 'Are they taking the piss?' And as we were
later threatened with, if indeed we were 'taking the piss,' we would be at the receiving end of — something I was
unfamiliar with at the time — namely, a 'Birmingham handshake,' of which I could only imagine the horrors. So I can
now answer Ozzy's question in person face to face. No, Ozzy, we weren't taking the piss. We were just four snot-nosed
kids on our first go-around in the big leagues hoping that one of the key people — that would be you, Ozzy —
responsible for bringing us to that soundcheck, to that stage, on that tour, would honor us in a moment of the planets
spontaneously aligning by joining us on stage and singing the words to the music, the very music that forever changed our
lives, the music that was directly responsible for us not only being at that soundcheck, on that stage, on that tour, but
also the very music that is directly responsible for us being here tonight celebrating your triumphs. And in our turn, we
are honored to be the ones chosen from the thousands of bands you have spawned in your wake to honor you, BLACK SABBATH,
and induct you into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on this night, a decade late or not. And with that, Bill, Geezer, Ozzy
and Tony, I salute you with much love, respect, appreciation and gratitude. Thank you."
James Hetfield:
BLACK SABBATH is mammoth riffs with menacing lyrics that made me oh so happy. That was gonna be my speech — that was
it — but Springsteen kind of upped the ante the last year. I'll go a little deeper. Picture a nine-year-old boy — quiet,
well-behaved on the outside, but on the inside boiling and dying for a life to burst open with some sort of — any sort of
— stimulation and the discovery of music was what was to burst it wide open. But not just any music. This was more than
just music — a powerful, loud, heavy sound that moved his soul. You see, this timid nine-year-old constantly raided his
roommate-slash-older brother's record collection, and going against his older brother's wishes, played those off-limit
records on the forbidden record player. And out of all the records he could have worn out, there was no other choice —
the very moment he saw their earliest album cover, he knew they were going to offer him a different kind of ride. He was
drawn to them like a magnet to metal… That's pretty lame, yes. OK, I'll try again. More like a shy boy to his own loud
voice. Those monstrous riffs lived inside him and spoke the feelings he could never put into words [choking up], sending
chills of inspiration through him, from those gloomy lyrics and outlaw chords and all. They helped crack the shell he was
stuck in. Also, scaring his mom and sister was an extra bonus. And now, as the former nine-year-old speaks to you here,
as an adult musician — I know those two words really don't go together — I realize that without their defining sound, as
my friend Lars has said, there would be no METALLICA, especially with one James Hetfield. Never have I known a more
timeless and influential band. They have spread their wonderful disease through generations of musicians. They are
always listed as an influence by heavy bands to this day. They are loved and highly respected as the fathers of heavy
music. It truly is a dream come true and an extreme honor for me and the nine-year-old still inside of me to induct
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame such a significant group of musicians. And in the words of our fearless leader
Ozzy Osbourne, 'Let's go fucking crazy!'"
Auf die Fragen hin, wer denn Metallica in die Hall Of Fame einführen solle, antwortete Lars ironisch: "Dave Mustaine". Wann und
ob das jemals der Fall sein wird, steht aber noch in den Sternen.

WIE DER GODSMACK GITARRIST JAMES HETFIELD GITARRENSTUNDEN GAB | 13.03.06
Aus einem Interview von MP3.com mit dem Godsmack-Gitarristen Tony Rambola:
MP3.com: Wie war es, mit Metallica zu touren?
Tony: Das war toll. Ich mag, was sie tun, und ich bewundere sie, aber ich habe mir nie irgendetwas von ihrem Material
gekauft, weischt? So ein Fan war ich dann doch nicht. Aber ich wuchs damit auf, sie im Radio zu hören, ich kannte
ihre Musik und mochte sie sehr. Aber nachdem wir mit ihnen getourt waren... weisste... sie waren so nett. James
hetfield war ein super Typ, und nachdem wir mit ihnen getourt haben, was ich ein Fan.
MP3.com: Hast du die Dokumentation über sie gesehen?
Tony: Nein, habe ich nicht gesehen.
MP3.com: Ich empfehle dir, sie zu gucken. Es ist ein seltsamer Film. Mich hat nur interessiert, was du darüber denkst,
nachdem du mit ihnen auf Tour warst.
Tony: Sie schienen nett zu sein. Ich schwöre bei Gott, jeden Tag kam James Hetfield irgendwann in den Umkleideraum um
einfach "hey" zu sagen. Und es war witzig, als ich ihn zum ersten Mal in Europa traf, und im Umkleideraum saß und
auf meiner Akustikgitarre spielte... Ich spielte einen alten Led Zepplin-Song namens "Rain Song". Und das hat so'n
coolen Tune an sich, und er kam in unseren Umkleideraum, und er hörte den Song und meinte: "Hey, ist das der Rain Song?".
Und ich sagte "Ja". Und er dann "Na ja, den musste du mir mal zeigen". Und als nächstes sitze ich da und bringe James
Hetfield bei, wie man "Rain Song" von Led Zepplin spielt. Also, so habe ich ihn kennengelernt. Das war geil. Ich habe
versucht, gefasst zu bleiben, aber mit schlotterten die Knie"

METALLICAS PLAN FÜR DIE AUFNAHMEN ZUM NEUEN ALBUM | 11.03.06
Informationen des Rollingstone-Magazines zufolge planen Metallica, die nächsten 6 Monate allein am Songwriting für das
neue Album zu arbeiten, bevor es dann zum ersten mal zu Aufnahmen ins Studio geht. Das sieht sowohl das Komponieren ganz
neuer Riffs, wie auch das Verwerten des bei Jam-Sessions auf der St.Anger-Tour bereits angetesteten Materials vor. Auf
ihren letzten Album, St.Anger, hatte man beides noch gleichzeitig gemacht.
Drummer Lars Ulrich dazu:
"Wir sind schon seit zwei Monaten dabei, zu schreiben, jammen und abzuhängen. In Moment gehören James, Rob und
ich dazu. Kirk kommt auch manchmal vorbei."
Hinzu kommt, dass Metallica gerade dabei sind, weitere kurze Live-Dates für den Sommer zu buchen, um die Monotonie zu
brechen. Im Juli soll's dann aber endgültig mit den Aufnahmen beginnen.

Ein Video von James Hetfields Auftritt in der Sendung "CMT Outlaws" des Courty Musik-Senders CMT vom 29.Oktober 2004 kann

James ist zu sehen, wie er auf der Bühne einen Klassiker des im Jahre 2002 verstorbenen Country-Sängers Wylon Jennings
spielt, mit Titel "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bits Has Gotten Out Of Hand". Mit ihm in der Band spielt auch Bob Rock.
James Hetfield dazu:
"Das war wirklich etwas besonderes und anderes. Ich hatte wirklich viel Spaß"
Hetfield war erst 12, als die legendäre Jennings-Platte "Wanted: The Outlaws" herauskam, die die Country-Musik
nachhaltig ändern sollte. In einem Interview aus dem Jahre 2004 erklärte James, dass er Fan des Sänger wurde, weil er
lange Haare und eine elektrische Gitarre gehabt hätte. Ausserdem war sein Vater ein Fan Jennings. Später sollten beide
sogar Freunde werden.
"Da gibt es eine Menge an Parallelen. Die Business-Sache, die Leute, die immer "Nein" zu dir sagen wollen, und dann die
Ja-Sager um dich herum... Da fühlten wir uns verbunden"
Auch Jennings Ehefrau Jessi Colter sieht Parallelen zwischen Hetfield und ihrem Ehemann:
"Seine Musik ist orginell. Aber ich denke da eher an den Mann - und James hat den Mythos gebrochen, genau, wie Waylon.
Wayon hat den Hank Williams-Mythos gebrochen, und James hat den Heavy Metal-Scheiss, nachdem du komplett wahnsinnig
sein musst, um irgendwas zu tun, gebrochen"

METALLICA BEGINNEN AUFNAHMEN IM JULI | 06.03.06
Laut Blabbermouth.net haben Metallica nahestehende Personen angegeben, dass die Band trotz der Gerüchte um eine Teilnahme
an der Ozzfest-Tour in diesem Jahr keine Shows in den USA spielen wird. Es bleibt bei den angekündigten Dates in Südafrika
(18-25.März) und Europa (Juni).
Im Juli werden sich Hetfield und co dann ins Studio begeben, um mit dem neuen Produzenten Rick Rubin endgültig die
Aufnahmen des neues Materials für ihr neuntes Studio-Album zu beginnen. Man kann also davon ausgehen, dass der
Songwriting-Prozeß dann schon abgeschlossen ist, und, sofern diesmal nichts dazwischen kommt, man für Herbst/Winter 2006
das neue Album erwarten kann.

ULRICH STATEMENT FÜR METCLUB MITGLIEDER | 06.03.06
